Senior Management and Group Heads

Verne O. Sedlacek, President and Chief Executive Officer – In addition, Mr. Sedlacek serves as a member of the Commonfund Group Investment Committee. Prior to Commonfund, he was President and COO of John W. Henry & Company, Inc., President and Director of Westport Capital Management Corporation and Global Capital Management Limited since 1998. Previously Mr. Sedlacek served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the Harvard Management Company, where he was responsible for managing the areas of personnel, budgets, systems, performance, analysis, contract, credit, compliance, custody, operations, cash management, securities lending, and market risk evaluation for the then approximately $14 billion University Fund. He also has served on many nonprofit and for-profit boards. Mr. Sedlacek earned an A.B. in Economics from Princeton University and was certified as a CPA by the State of New York in 1978.

 

 

 

 

Lyn Hutton, CFA, Chief Investment Officer – Ms. Hutton joined Commonfund in 2003 as Chief Investment Officer. In this capacity, Ms. Hutton has oversight responsibility for all aspects of investment strategy, portfolio management, due diligence and manager selection for all of the organization's investment funds, as well as non-investment programs and services. She also chairs the Commonfund Group Investment Policy Committee.  Before joining the firm, Ms. Hutton served as the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation since June, 1998. She was responsible for the financial administration of the Foundation and for management of the Foundation’s $4.0 billion investment portfolio. In addition, Ms. Hutton was a corporate officer of the Foundation and a member of its senior management team. Prior to MacArthur, Ms. Hutton served at Dartmouth College as Vice President and Treasurer, handling its investments and treasury, budgeting and planning, the controller’s office, internal audit, administrative services, facilities operations and human resources. She has also been Senior Vice President, Administration and Treasurer for the University of Southern California. Ms. Hutton is a Chartered Financial Analyst and was a Certified Public Accountant (currently non-practicing), and a member of the CFA Institute. She serves on several boards, including the MSCI Editorial Advisory Board, and has been a Trustee for Commonfund, Commonfund Realty and Commonfund Capital. Ms. Hutton is an alumna of the University of Southern California and graduated with honors from USC School of Business Administration.

 

 

E. Lyndon Tefft, Chief Operating Officer – Mr. Tefft joined Commonfund in 2003 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In this capacity, he is responsible for the management and oversight of Commonfund's Information Technology, Operations and Corporate Accounting teams. Before joining the firm, Mr. Tefft spent five years serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the John W. Henry & Company, Inc. Prior to that, he spent over ten years with Harvard University and four years with Harvard Management Company. At Harvard Management Company, he led the development of an information technology infrastructure to support global investment and trading in equities, bonds, futures, swaps, currencies and closed end funds. He holds an M.B.A. from Wharton Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in Industrial Management from Purdue University.

 

 

 

 

John W. Auchincloss, Secretary and General Counsel – Mr. Auchincloss also serves as a member of the Commonfund Group Investment Committee. He joined Commonfund and its subsidiaries in 1996. Mr. Auchincloss has been a practicing attorney since 1984, and has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where his roles included serving as Deputy Appellate Attorney and as a member of that office’s Securities and Commodities Frauds Task Force, and has worked as a corporate associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City. He holds a B.A. degree in History from Yale University, a J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law and an L.L.M. from Cambridge University.

 

MaryEllen Beaudreault, Managing Director, Head of Fixed Income and Commodities – Ms. Beaudreault is responsible for the design, portfolio construction and implementation of investment strategies for Commonfund's $19 billion fixed income and commodity programs. Prior to joining Commonfund in 1993, she was with Buck Pension Fund Services, a pension consulting firm, for seven years. Ms. Beaudreault served as an investment consultant conducting asset allocation, manager searches and portfolio reviews for both public and private pension funds. In that capacity, she also served as a consultant to Commonfund¹s fixed income programs. She received her B.S. from Central Connecticut State University.

 

        

Susan J. Carter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Commonfund Capital, Inc. – Ms. Carter also serves as a senior member of the Commonfund Executive Management Team. She oversees Commonfund¹s domestic and international venture capital, private equity and natural resources investment programs with aggregate committed capital of over $7.5 billion from over 500 institutional investors from the nonprofit community. Ms. Carter leads a team of 28 dedicated private capital professionals. Before joining Commonfund in 1989, she was with the Morgan Stanley Venture Capital Group and General Electric Investment Corporation. Ms. Carter serves as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. She holds an A.B. degree in Economics and Business from Lafayette College.

 

Sarah E. Clark, Managing Director, Head of the Strategic Solutions Group - Ms. Clark is responsible for tailoring Commonfund’s capabilities to achieve individual client needs and goals. Prior to joining Commonfund in 2000, Sarah was a Vice President at Schroder Investment Management North America, where she was a member of the fixed income Investment Strategy Group and was responsible for marketing and client servicing the fixed income products. She has over 22 years investment experience, eight years at investment management firms - Bankers Trust Company and Glickenhaus & Co and eight years at consulting companies -Asset Strategy Consulting and InterSec Research Corp. Sarah received her A.B. from Lafayette College.

 

 

A. Nicholas De Monico, Managing Director and Head of Marketable Alternatives – Mr. De Monico is responsible for managing Commonfund’s marketable alternative investment programs, including its hedge, absolute return, index plus and global hedged programs. Prior to joining Commonfund in 2002, he was Managing Director and Portfolio Manager for Citigroup Alternative Investments, where he was on the management team responsible for $2 billion in hedge fund investments for eight diversified multi-strategy and single-strategy funds. Previously, as Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager for CDC Investment Management Corp., a subsidiary of Caisse Des Depots Group, Mr. De Monico managed mortgage hedge positions and relative value trading strategies with about $2 billion in assets. He earned an M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in Political Science from Columbia College.

 

 

 

 

Eugene P. Ferguson, Chief Service and Sales Officer and President of Commonfund Securities, Inc. – In this capacity, Mr. Ferguson is responsible for overseeing all aspects of client service and sales, including relationship management, business development and consultant services. He is a member of the Commonfund Senior Management Group and also sits on the Commonfund Investment Policy Committee. Prior to joining Commonfund, Mr. Ferguson was with AIG Global Investment Group where he managed service and sales for large institutional investors including endowments, foundations and nonprofit healthcare organizations. Prior to that he was at Forstmann-Leff International and Salomon Brothers Asset Management Company. His investment experience includes domestic, international and emerging markets equity, domestic, international and emerging markets fixed income, hedge funds, structured products and private equity funds. Mr. Ferguson began his career by spending 15 years at IBM in the client service area. He earned a B.S. from Manhattan College.

 

John S. Griswold Jr., Executive Director, Commonfund Institute – directs Commonfund’s educational, market research and professional development activities. As head of the Commonfund Institute, John has initiated and supervised Commonfund’s Benchmarks Studies of educational endowments, foundations and healthcare institutions, which collectively survey the investment practices of over 1200 nonprofit institutions annually. In addition, he supervises and speaks at Commonfund’s annual Endowment Institute, monthly Trustee Roundtables and nonprofit investment seminars in various cities in the U.S. and Canada. John has authored several articles and book chapters on endowment management and the management of investment committees, and has spoken at numerous industry conferences and seminars. Prior to joining Commonfund in 1992, John spent seven years as a partner in an investment management firm, Jefferson Financial Group, where he helped develop and market hedge funds of funds. John is a member of numerous non-profit boards and investment committees, including the Boards of Trustees of Pomfret School in Connecticut, the Regional Plan Association, the Colony Foundation and The Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He is a graduate of Yale University and attended Columbia Business School.

 

Jeffrey T. Long, CFA, Managing Director and Head of Equities – Mr. Long oversees all aspects of the marketable equity investment programs, including investment strategy, portfolio management, due diligence and manager selection. Prior to joining Commonfund in 2004, He was Managing Director, Associate Director of Equity Research for Citigroup Asset Management since 2002. Mr. Long managed equity research analysts covering more than 600 companies globally through quantitative systematic, traditional growth and value, and research analyst driven strategies. Before joining Citigroup in 1998 as a Senior Equity Analyst, he was Vice President, Senior Equity Analyst for J. P. Morgan Securities, Inc. in New York. Earlier, Mr. Long was Vice President, Head of Financial Advisory for J. P. Morgan Australia, Ltd. in Melbourne, Australia and also held positions with Morgan Guaranty Trust Company in Seoul, Korea and New York. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Brown University and is a member of the Association for Investment Management and Research.

 

Keith W. Luke, Managing Director & Group Head, Strategic Planning and Communications - Mr. Luke joined Commonfund in 1999. Keith is responsible for managing Commonfund's corporate branding, corporate communications, marketing and strategic planning activities. In this capacity, he manages a team of marketing communication specialists and oversees firm-wide strategic initiatives including new product and market development. He also serves as a member of the Commonfund Senior Executive Group. Prior to joining Commonfund, Keith was a Vice President at Citibank, holding a number of marketing and planning positions in The Private Bank and Corporate Bank. Prior to Citibank, he was with HSBC USA (formerly Marine Midland Bank) in corporate finance and investment banking. Keith earned a B.A. in Economics at Duke University and an M.B.A. in Finance from NYU Stern School of Business.
William W. Martin, Chief Risk Officer - Mr. Martin joined Commonfund in 2008 from Bank of America, where he was Chief Risk Officer of Columbia Management & Alternative Investments. He is a member of the Commonfund Senior Management Group and the Commonfund Investment Policy Committee. Prior to Bank of America, Mr. Martin was a Partner & Global Head of Investment Risk Management for INVESCO in London where he implemented a risk management framework covering investment management and distribution activities across 16 investment centers around the world including Asia Pacific, Australia, Europe and the USA, covering $200 billion in assets under management. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), a not-for-profit association of over 60,000 members worldwide, focused on the advancement of the risk management profession through education, training and testing. He is also a member of the Board of Overseers at the New England Conservatory of Music. Mr. Martin earned his Bachelors of Business Administration - Management Science degree from The City University of New York, Baruch School of Business Administration.

Hugh C. Scott, Managing Director, Co-Head of Commonfund Realty –Mr. Scott joined Commonfund Realty in 1995, after 10 years of real estate investment experience with Travelers Realty Investment Company and Homart Development Company. Mr. Scott has overall responsibility for acquisitions of property, due diligence and property dispositions as portfolio manager for the Fund. Mr. Scott received a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan and his M.M. in Marketing and Finance from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Mr. Scott is an active member of the PREA, NAREIM and the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and the ULI.

Timothy M. ShineManaging Director, Co-Head of Commonfund Realty – Mr. Shine joined Commonfund Realty in January, 2000. Prior to joining Commonfund, his real estate experience included positions with CB Richard Ellis Investors, formerly Westmark Realty Advisors/TCW Realty Advisors as well as with the New Boston Fund. Mr. Shine graduated cum laude from the University of Connecticut, where he earned his bachelors degree in finance while working with the University’s Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics. Mr. Shine is an active member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), National Association of Industrial and Office Parks (NAIOP), the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers (NAREIM). Mr. Shine has overall responsibility for the operations and asset management of the Fund as well as client relations.

 

Michael H. Strauss, Chief Economist and Chief Operating Officer –  Mr. Strauss joined Commonfund in 1998. Michael has more than 25 years of institutional financial services and investment experience. Previously, he held positions as a top-ranked chief economist and financial market strategist with Sanwa Securities, Yamaichi International (America) Inc., and UBS Securities. Michael received the Market News Forecaster Award as the most accurate "Wall Street" economist for 1997 and has been a speaker on CNN and CNBC and, over the years, has been quoted by Reuters, Dow Jones Capital Markets, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Barrons. He has been a faculty member at the Treasury Institute for Higher Education (TIHE), the Tax Institute for Colleges and Universities (TIFCU), and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) Conference. He holds a B.S. degree with distinction from Cornell University and a M.B.A. with distinction from New York University.
