Commonfund Names Laurance R. Hoagland, Jr. and Charles J. Pippin as Board Members
Endowment Management Leader Appoints Stanford and Pepperdine University Financial Executives to Its Board of Trustees
WILTON, CT, February 13, 2001, 2001 — Commonfund, the leading financial manager for educational institutions nationwide, today announced the appointment of Laurance R. (Laurie) Hoagland, Jr. and Charles J. (Jeff) Pippin to Commonfund's Board of Trustees. In their new role as Commonfund Trustees, Hoagland and Pippin will help establish the investment objectives and policies for Commonfund's investment funds, provide strategic guidance for the management of investment products, provide strategic direction for new business opportunities, as well as provide unique perspective from each of their areas of expertise to insure Commonfund has access to the best investment thinking available.

Perold, Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration; and Arthur Zeikel, Merrill Lynch Asset Management (retired) on Commonfund's Board of Trustees and will serve for a period of 3 years.
Laurie Hoagland stepped down as President and CEO of Stanford Management Company, Stanford University's $9 billion investment and real estate organization, in August 2000. In January 2001, he assumed responsibility for the investment activities of the Hewlett Foundation as Treasurer and CIO.
For the 11 years prior to joining Stanford in 1991, Mr. Hoagland was a co-founder and partner in the investment management firm of Anderson, Hoagland and Company in St. Louis. He also held positions as Vice President and Treasurer of Cummins Engine Company, and Vice President and Portfolio Manager of the Irwin Management Company in Columbus, Indiana. He is a member of the Finance Committee of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Investment Committee of the Hewlett Foundation.
Laurie graduated from Stanford University with an AB in Economics in 1958. He received a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University as a Marshal Scholar in 1960, and earned an MBA from Harvard in 1962.
Recently named as Vice President for Finance and Administration at Pepperdine University, Jeff Pippin reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the President's cabinet, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the University Management Committee. Jeff also serves as chief investment officer, and oversees the management of investment portfolios in excess of $600 million, including an endowment of over $400 million.
Jeff is a certified public accountant and is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He has served as a member of the California State Treasurer's Investment Advisory Committee, the President's Advisory Committee of Commonfund, the Investment Advisory Committee of the West Coast Athletic Conference, and the Finance Committee of La Reina High School, a private college preparatory school in Thousand Oaks, California. He has also served as an adjunct professor in the Business Administration division at Pepperdine University since 1983.
Jeff graduated from Abilene Christian University Magna Cum Laude in 1975 with a B.B.A. in accounting. He began work with Pepperdine University in 1981, where he also earned a Master of Business Administration degree.
