Bank of America, Senior Vice President & Chief Risk Officer, Columbia Management & Alternative Investments and Chair of Board of Trustees for the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) named to oversee all of Commonfund’s Risk Management Initiatives
Wilton, CT, March 7, 2008 - Commonfund, the nation’s largest investment management firm devoted exclusively to nonprofit investors today announced the hiring of William W. Martin, Senior Vice President & Chief Risk Officer, Columbia Management & Alternative Investments (a division of Bank of America) to oversee all of Commonfund’s risk management initiatives. Mr. Martin is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), a not-for-profit association of over 60,000 members worldwide, focused on the advancement of the risk management profession through education, training and testing.
In announcing Mr. Martin’s appointment, Commonfund President and CEO, Verne O. Sedlacek asserted that “risk is inseparable from the investment process. We need to be cognizant of this not only as Commonfund’s client base within the nonprofit community grows, but as the types of investment vehicles and strategies open to them broaden. Prior to Bank of America, Mr. Martin was a Partner & Global Head of Investment Risk Management for INVESCO in London where he implemented a risk management framework covering investment management and distribution activities across 16 investment centers around the world including Asia Pacific, Australia, Europe and the USA, covering $200 billion in assets under management.
Mr. Martin will be joining a core team of four risk management professionals currently led by Interim Group Head Vivian Lee-Shiue, who joined Commonfund from GE Commercial in September. Martin will report jointly to Mr. Sedlacek as well as Commonfund’s Audit and Risk Management Committee, currently Chaired by William N. Goetzmann.
He earned his Bachelors of Business Administration – Management Science degree from The City University of New York, Baruch School of Business Administration. Additionally, Martin was named Risk Manager of the Year in 2000 by the Global Association of Risk Professionals.
Mr. Martin is a member of the Board of Overseers at the New England Conservatory of Music.
