Commonfund Hires Mark Anson as Chief Investment Officer

October 28, 2015  | by Catherine Keating

Dear Clients and Friends:

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Anson as Commonfund's Chief Investment Officer. Mark is currently CIO of the Robert Bass Family Office. Previously, he has served as CIO of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the British Telecom Pension Scheme and as President of Nuveen Investments.

Mark is known to many of you as an outstanding institutional investor and as a leader and innovator across asset classes, particularly in alternative investing. In his new role, Mark will serve on Commonfund's Operating Committee and will chair the Investment Policy and Asset Allocation Committees.

Over the next few months, Mark will be transitioning his responsibilities with the Bass Family and will join Commonfund in January. We look forward to introducing Mark to you in the new year.

In addition to his investment acumen, Mark will bring tremendous thought leadership to our clients and the investment community we serve. He has published numerous journal articles and financial textbooks over his career, including the Handbook of Alternative Assets, the textbook used for the CAIA certification program. He serves on the Board of the CAIA Association and has also served on the Board of the CFA Institute and on the Investor Advisory Board to the Chariman of the New York Stock Exchange. Mark holds a B.A. in Chemistry and Economics from St. Olaf College, a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Finance from Columbia University as well as a J.D. from Northwestern. He also holds CFA, CAIA, and CPA designations.

Our search for a CIO was broad and we are honored by the remarkable investment talent that was interested in serving our Commonfund clients and mission. I would also like to thank our Commonfund Board search subcommittee of Board Chair, Bob Litterman, UTIMCO President and CEO, Bruce Zimmerman, and Albright Stonebridge Managing Principal, Michael Warren, for their efforts over the last several months.

My colleagues and I thank you for your support as we conducted this search. We appreciate the confidence you have placed in Commonfund and are committed to continuing to earn it. Mark will bring strong investing insight to all of us and we welcome him with great excitement for the future.

With thanks and best regards from the whole Commonfund team,

Catherine M. Keating
President & Chief Executive Officer
