Commonfund Renames Its Two Core Businesses

The move will bring added clarity to an expanding range of offerings

JANUARY 3, 2023, Wilton, CT - Commonfund is introducing new names for its two core businesses that will enhance clarity while supporting continued growth. The changes will take effect on February 1, 2023.

  • The company’s OCIO business, formerly known as Commonfund Asset Management Company, will be called Commonfund OCIO, Inc.
  • The company’s private equity business, formerly known as Commonfund Capital, Inc. will be called CF Private Equity, Inc.
  • The corporate brand name, Commonfund, and the name of the company’s highly regarded research and education center, Commonfund Institute, will not change.

The new naming framework reflects the evolution of Commonfund. The company was established in 1971 to serve the investment management needs of educational endowments and other nonprofits. It has expanded significantly since then to encompass a successful private equity business that serves nonprofit organizations as well as pensions and for-profit investors, including single/multi-family offices, Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), and insurance companies – both in North America and select markets globally. The new names more clearly reflect the services each business provides.

The name changes will not impact how the company works with clients or how it is organized internally. A new website to come will provide more in-depth information about the private equity business. Current clients of both businesses will continue to use the Commonfund portal to access their statements, reports, and other information.

“The new names are intended to clearly delineate the focus of both businesses while maintaining and strengthening the connection to the parent company,” said Mark Anson, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer. “The Commonfund team shares the same mission and values, whether we’re investing on behalf of an endowment responsible for ensuring intergenerational equity, a family office pursuing a cause close to their heart, or a foundation that creates opportunities for underserved youth. Our shared goal, with all our clients, is to continuously Aim Higher."
